Top 5 Waterfalls in Switzerland

Despite being regarded as the home of the alps in Europe, there is more to Switzerland's tourist attractions than just magnificent mountains.

Switzerland is home to some very spectacular waterfalls that you can visit if, you plan a Spring or Summer vacation in the country.

NOTE: While there are several famous and lesser-known waterfalls in Switzerland, this list would only discuss five spectacular ones. Other beautiful waterfalls worth visiting would be listed as honorable mentions should you be interested in going on an adventurous hike.

5. Murrenbach Waterfall, Bern Canton

The Murrenbach Waterfall is located within the beautiful Lauterbrunnen Valley. It is one of the 72 different waterfalls in the valley and boasts an impressive 417m drop. The water flow and width of the Waterfall greatly depends on the time of the year one visits. Regardless of the time you visit, the quiet green scenery is one you will genuinely enjoy.

The waterfall is easily accessible via a cable car.

4. Cascata Di Foroglio, Ticino Canton

The Canton Ticino is home to several beautiful waterfalls. The most visited waterfall in the area is the Cascata Di Foroglio, and for a good reason.

The Cascata Di Foroglio is located next to a grand small stone village creating charming scenery that can't be overlooked.

Honorable Mention: Cascata Di Bignasco, Ticino Canton

Also called the Cascata Grande, the Cascata Di Bignasco is one waterfall you don't want to miss, especially if you are exploring Switzerland with your family. This is because there are several picnic tables and the water from the waterfalls forms a natural swimming pool that makes time with your family enjoyable and an epic experience.

3. Rheinfall, Schaffhausen Canton

Found on the famous Rhine River, the Rheinfall is one of the most famous natural waterfalls in the world. It is the largest waterfall in Europe and boasts one of the most potent water rushes of all the waterfalls in Europe.

One of the main things that make this waterfall a must-see is its proximity to Zurich. Another reason is the ease with which one can access it. With multiple viewing platforms and an impressive rocky island right in the middle of the mighty torrent where one can stand and admire the falls.

2. Reichenbach Waterfall, Bern Canton

The stunning Reichenbach Waterfall is located close to the town of Meiringen in the Bern Canton and is probably the easiest to access and experience waterfall on this list.

Boasting an impressive drop of 250m, the easiest way to access the waterfall is by taking a funicular ride. A more adventurous way is by hiking a trail leading to a viewpoint near the waterfall.

Asides from the attractive views of its surrounding valley, the waterfall is also famously known for its history with Sherlock Holmes, with various reports tagging it as the site of Sherlock Holmes's death.

And after sightseeing, you can rent and ride a mountain scooter around the valley or explore the town of Meiringen.

1. Staubbach Waterfall, Bern Canton

Reaching a vertical height of 297m and serving as a backdrop for the picturesque village of Lauterbrunnen, the Staubbach Waterfall is one of the highest waterfalls in Switzerland. It is just one of a series of spectacular waterfalls found around Lauterbrunnen Valley and the Bern Canton.

Near the waterfall is a steep but well-worn pathway that you can use to make your way to the top of the waterfall. The grand views and the outstandingly beautiful scenery found around the waterfall makes it worthy of being ranked the nummer 1 waterfall in Switzerland.

Honorable Mention: The Trummelbach Waterfall

As earlier stated, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is home to about 72 waterfalls, some of which are more popular than others.

The Trummelbach Waterfall is a glacier-fed waterfall inside a mountain and can be accessed by lift, tunnels or galleries. To put how incredible this waterfall is into words won't do it justice. Simply put it that way: the Trummelbach Waterfall is unlike any waterfall you have ever seen. This alone is reason enough to check it out when you are in the country.
